The goal of this qualitative interpretative research is to critically analyze the developments that study the adaptive expertise of teachers in unusual situations such as huge critical incidents that have been seen in Chile during the last year. Both “October-19´s” domestic social crisis and the worldwide pandemic, which arrived to Chile in March 2020, can be considered as a great critical incident event that subjected those involved in education to show how adaptable they can be. This research focuses on university teachers, most of whom do not have pedagogical instruction and analyses whether their adaptive expertise can be considered a teaching talent and whether it is of a natural or rather acquired nature. Likewise, the contribution that commitment and engagement can make as teachers personal characteristics is recognized and researched. Finally, the concept of resilience is incorporated as a comprehensive dimension of the behavior of teachers in crisis situations. For this, the literature is reviewed through a systematic and narrative methodology and the scope of this, in the national experience, is sought through interviews with a group of university teachers as key subjects. The results of the research allow to demonstrate that teaching talent, represented in their adaptability, was a relevant tool during the crisis to give continuity to the educational process and achieve deep learning for students, and that this talent has natural teacher´s components as acquired through experience. Key words: adaptive expertise, critical incident, teaching talent, commitment, engagement, resilience.
